About

Super Massive is the collaboration of singer/writer Malina Hamilton-Smith and drummer/composer Glenn Abbott.

Together the duo make intense, exhilarating and sexy electro/alternative/pop music, driven by funky dance grooves and delivered with the lustiness of a rock band. Imagine if you blended AC/DC or Led Zeppelin with Daft Punk or Basement Jaxx, added some Garbage, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Siouxsie Sioux & Florence & The Machine, and finished it off with a dash of Depeche Mode and Muse.

With bassist Dan Bruce joining them for live shows, Super Massive have toured Australia & Asia receiving rave reviews, hot ticket recommendations & hit predictions. Last year MX Magazine featured Super Massive on the cover as “one of Sydney’s best emerging electronic/dance/rock bands”; Time Off named them a band “On The Up” and Scout TV named them one of the Top 5 breakthrough Australian bands of 2009 alongside Art Vs Science. The duo also have a MusicOz Award for Best Alternative Artist under their belts.

On Monday night we went to see Nile Rodgers and Chic Organisation play live at the Metro Theatre in Sydney.

It was – without exaggeration - the MOST AMAZING SHOW EITHER OF US HAVE SEEN IN OUR ENTIRE LIVES. We’ve been fans for years – Nile is one of our greatest inspirations - so we were ridiculously excited about the show beforehand anyway, but.. the show still went way beyond even our highest expectations. We’ll remember it forever, and I wouldn’t be surprised if the band does too, it was such an incredible night.

It was a nine-piece band and everyone sang. The musicianship of every member of the band was just beyond anything we’ve ever seen in Australia. Not a single note out of place. And the energy was UNBELIEVABLE! – they brought the house down. It was a party, not just a gig. A sublime experience. The whole audience danced non-stop the entire night, and the band were loving it.

They played all the Chic hits – “Le Freak”, “Good Times”, “Dance Dance Dance”, “Everybody Dance” - as well as a heap of hits that Nile Rodgers & Bernard Edwards produced for major artists like Diana Ross, Sister Sledge, David Bowie, Madonna, Duran Duran and more, eg "Upside Down", “We Are Family”, “He’s The Greatest Dancer”, “Let’s Dance”, “Like A Virgin”, “Notorious”… and they also played a wicked version of INXS’ Original Sin with a totally f#@k off bass solo at the end. INXS were in the audience watching as well, and I think they would have felt a little intimidated by the version Chic knocked out. It was so incredible to hear these songs played live, with all the extra raw energy, showmanship and musicality these astounding musicians could bring. AAAHHHH HEAVEN!!

After three standing ovations and two encores the band finally left the stage with all of us still wanting more - MINDS BLOWN!!

We staggered out of there completely dazed, elated and inspired.

Nile said they'll be coming back to Australia next year. If they do, BUY A TICKET!

The night even started out with a nice surprise too, because we heard that Nile was doing a book signing earlier on. (In true Australian promoter fashion they failed to mention it to anyone, so we only found out about it that afternoon.) There was only a very small crowd there, so we got to meet the man himself for a brief chat, a photo and an autograph for our copy of his autobiography.

While we were there we also gave him a copy of some our new album songs, which we just finished mixing last weekend !!

So… we’re stoked to say, Nile Rodgers will be the first person to hear our new songs :)
